History: How the stereo became a theater at home
Equipment rack trivia: If you
can't buy it, build it.
NEWS FLASH
HomeTheater equipment for sale.
I'm selling major components of the HomeTheater - Infinity Kappa 8,
Kappa 8.1, Kappa Video, Tivo, Avalanche Mono-blocks, etc. all for sale.
Check it out!
Here's the normal state of the system. I'm using the regular Sony
Widescreen TV for casual viewing..

Bring it on! The screen comes down when watching movies. The screen
measures 106" in 16x9 widescreen.

Here's the ceiling mounted Sony VPL-VW10HT LCD projector. The black thing
in the corner is one of the surround speakers - Infinity Kappa
8.1.

Here is a list of the more important components in the system.

Sunfire
Theater Grand Processor II
There simply aren't words for how sweet this processor is. Does
all the usual stuff, Dolby Digital, DTS etc, but also some special stuff
like Holographic Sound (enhances stereo) and seven axis output (two extra
side speakers for 7.1). Balanced output for all five channels (I'm only
using XLR for the mains though). Three subwoofer outputs. And the
design... the design... oh the design...

Sony
VPL-VW10HT
This is the ceiling mounted projector I use when watching movies and
other cool things (like Star Trek n' stuff). Bright, quiet, native 16x9
Widescreen LCD panels, HD resolution etc.

Philips
Pronto Pro TSU6000
Fully customizable remote control with backlit color LCD screen and 8MB
RAM. This is a sweet little thing that can be customizable through the
computer. You literally draw the user interface yourself and download it
to the remote control.

Avalanche A10 power amplifier.
These mono blocks rocks. Literarily, because they are made of stone.
There are at least four good things with these blocks.
- They sound great.
- They can push out a lot of power - the kappa 8's are notoriously
difficult to drive but these guys handle them with charm.
- They are made of stone so they look really good too. It's not all
vanity either. They are made out of soapstone, the same material they
use for pizza ovens because of its magnificent heat transfer ability.
They don't need any special cooling because the entire cover acts as a
heat sink.
- They have an automatic on/off mode so when they haven't received any
input for a while they step down to a 5 watt stand-by mode.

Panasonic
DVD-H1000 Progressive Scan DVD Player
Extremely nice 'no bullshit' player. Superb image quality, fantastic
build quality - 20 kilos - we're talking heavy-metal here. |
 |
Sony SVR-2000 - Tivo DVR (132 Hours) This
little beauty is
a Tivo Series 1 device I upgraded from 30 to 132 hours. I love my Tivo. The
black ugly thing is the digital cable box. |
 |
Panasonic
AG-1980 S-VHS
This is an industrial strength machine. As a matter of fact, on the top
cover it says: "For commercial use only". Some goodies like a
built-in full field Time Base Corrector, amorphous pro head and extremely
stable mechanics makes this the best VCR I've ever seen. I have watched
rental VHS tapes on this machine and thought for a moment I was watching a
DVD.

Infinity Kappa 8
The normal as well as "naked" view of the front 8k speakers.
I normally run them with the speaker grille installed (black fabric). I
have a spotlight shooting up against the wall behind the speakers - with
the backlight and the grille on they sort of look like big black monoliths.
Oh my God - They're not full of stars...
Needless to say, I like these speakers a lot. They sound awesome and
their only 'problem' is that they are difficult to drive - fortunately the
Avalanche amps has plenty of power to spare and handles them just
fine.
Sorry for the funky colors in the picture. It's hard as hell taking
pictures on black equipment against a white background. |
 |
Infinity Kappa Video speaker This is the center speaker in the system. not
a lot to say about it
other than it sonically matches the rest of the kappa speakers so it's a
natural choice.
Btw, to the upper left you can see the remote control receiver I built
for the AudioServer.

Infinity Kappa 8.1 - Surround Speakers
Sounds kind of funny to call them surround speakers, but that's what
they are. They are in the back of the room. They are fed by the Adcom
GFA-6000 and seem quite happy with that. As with the front speakers I run
them with the grill on.
Also, may I proudly brag about the flower on top of it? Let me set one
thing straight first - I normally do not allow decorating the theater
equipment with flowers, or anything other than movie props, but I put
these up there last Christmas which the intention of throwing them out in
January when they die - these flowers are supposed to die as soon as
Christmas is over. I took this picture in October - and that's the October
after Christmas. Green fingers indeed. I'm going to keep
them for a full year, just to prove to everyone that I could. After that
we'll see. November 2002 side node: These buggers refuse to die
regardless of how I treat them. They are on their third Christmas now and
they are as happy as ever - perhaps a little greener than before (not as
red). Who can blame them though - imagine living your whole life on top of a
semi-classic infinity speaker that only plays good music! I'd refuse to die
too. |

Adcom
GFA-6000
This 5 channel power amp (3x100W + 2x60W) serves the center speaker and
the Infinity Kappa 8.1 surround speakers. In theory this one is probably
not powerful enough to drive the 8.1k's, but since they are serving as
surround speakers they are never pushed that hard so it turns out it works
great. Nice natural sound too. |
 |
Sony X202 ES CD Player
This is the CD player. I don't use it that much anymore though. Besides
having all music hosted on the AudioServer, the Panasonic DVD-H1000 sounds
as good as it gets. Still, it's a great machine and I use it every now and
then. I like dedicated machines...
Oct 2002: I just removed this guys from the rack because I had to make
room for the TiVo. Every now and then I miss it... |
 |
Pioneer CLD-2950 Laserdisc
This is the PAL/NTSC Laserdisc player that has been the work horse of
my system since back in '94. It's a very reliable machine and the
only drawback is that it doesn't have an AC3 RF out so I only get Dolby
ProLogic out of it (no Dolby Digital or DTS).
|
 |
Sony TA-E80ES
This is a great preamp complete with gold finish and rosewood sides.
Only the designers at Sony can come up with something this nice. It sounds
like a dream too.
This machine is now delegated to be the pre-amp for my 'recording
studio' project.
